Summer's Almost Gone 22 Aug 08
Nearly three months without an update? Must be a new record even by my poor standards. Yet here we are at the end of August, mostly still wondering if the summer ever started at all as its been one of the wettest for many years.
We’ve been keeping ourselves busy and after what seemed like an endless saga, we finally have our wood-burning stove installed in the living room. With just one or two more bits of furniture to pick up, we should be back into the living room by the end of this weekend – only about three months after we moved out for what we thought would be three weeks. More details on the saga will be posted at a later date, I promise!
Unfortunately, we’ve had greater things to deal with than a delayed stove. Earlier this month, Sarah’s Auntie Barbara passed away following a second fight with cancer. Having never married, Barbara always treated Sarah as one of her own and, by extension, that came to apply to me and, more recently, to Ben as well. Barbara was a lovely lady who will be greatly missed and its sad to think that Ben will most likely have no memories of her at all.
Maybe its an inbuilt coping mechanism, to prevent we humans dwelling too long on our own mortality, but its startling how quickly some aspects of life return to ‘normal’ even after the loss of a close family member. And so, we can quickly find ourselves back being annoyed by silly little things that, in the grand scheme of things, shouldn’t even matter at all.
In my case, its the fact that my ‘cycle 2 work’ bike has been delayed yet again, that’s bugging me. Its now over a month late and with the summer bus service being even more unreliable and unpredictable than normal, I really am counting every day. Still maybe by the time it turns up, the kids will be back to school and the good weather will finally start, so that I can cycle to and from work in the glorious sunshine of an Indian summer… well I can dream.
