Make Compost Not War 28 May 07
Our subsidised compost bin has arrived at last!
In anticipation of its arrival, Sarah has been storing kitchen scraps in a bucket outside the back door, so we’re off to a flying start already. However, with only a small garden, the compost itself isn’t our main motivator, but rather the opportunity to further reduce what we put in the landfill bin each fortnight.
The compost bin is a bit of a beast, looking much like the bottom half of a Dalek and standing nearly 4 feet tall. I wasn’t expecting it to have a big hole in the bottom, but the idea is to place it over soil and let any liquid compost drain directly into the soil below, which seems sensible enough.
My main question is how to get the compost out of the bin, once its ready. What looks like an opening in the side of the bin (picture) isn’t an opening at all (it that seems you have to go to the higher models for that). So this means emptying the bin from either the top or from the bottom, removing the useable compost and then loading the rest of the decomposing waste back into the bin again, which hardly seems ideal to me.
I sense a bit of a bodge coming…
