Learning to Surf 25 Sep 07
Surfing is something that I’ve wanted to try for many many years, yet somehow I just never have managed to get round to it. Back in my school days, a friend and I planned a trip to Newquay, in Cornwall, so that we could learn to surf, but transport issues and money concerns meant that our dream never came to fruition. So, for the occasion of my 30th birthday (yes, I sneaked that one quietly past you in May), Sarah offered me a couple of surfing lessons as part of my birthday present and, last week, I finally got to try the sport that has eluded me for so long.
My surfing lesson was taken by Martin at TK Surf School in Portrush and, being on a Tuesday in the middle of September, included just one other beginner and myself. This allowed Martin to give each of us in turn one-to-one tuition and then some time to practice what we had just learnt. By the end of the 2 hour lesson, I was able to catch waves and stand up, though never for very long.
As well as being great fun, I also found that surfing must be good exercise as, the following day, parts of me hurt that I didn’t know existed. Simply wading out to above-waist depth water each time would certainly have provided a fair amount of resistance training.
I’m already trying to figure out when I can fit my next lesson in. I know the classes run well into November, but can’t say I fancy braving the cold water at that time of year. Still, I guess thats why we have wetsuits.
