Job Security (Or Lack of It)

Well, I still have a job. Up to 10am this morning I wasn’t so sure, but for several people in the office, that uncertainty became a certainty in the wrong direction. I thought we’d left behind the days of mass job cuts, in software firms, after the fall-out of the ‘dot com bubble’ bursting. Yet here we are, several years later, cutting jobs to cut costs and hoping that sales pick up or we could be facing yet more redundancies.

Times have changed in some ways though. The last time the company was releasing large numbers of people, nearly all the other local software companies were doing the same thing. Now, it seems that everyone else is hiring, which is both a good thing and a bad thing. Its good to know that should the worst happen, there are other jobs out there. However, at the same time it makes you wonder whats going wrong that we’re contracting when everyone else is expanding.

I’ve been with the same company for almost 8 years now and whilst I’m not really looking to move on, I have dipped my toe in the waters of the job market just to see what else is out there. So far, I haven’t seen anything to tempt me away. Given the current climate however, my concern is that I could wait too long and end up being pushed before I’m ready to jump. I do believe that the company has the talent and the products to turn things around, but without sales that doesn’t really mean an awful lot.
