Going Green - 6 Month Review 19 Jul 07
Its just over 6 months now since we brought this site to life and, as hoped, we do feel more accountable for our plans and intentions that have been posted online, than if we’d simply kept them to ourselves. So, it seems like a good time for a review of how we’re getting on with our plan to become more eco-friendly.
In the last 6 months we have:
- Switched to Electricity from Renewable Resources by filling in one simple form online
- Bought and installed a compost bin, which takes nearly all of our kitchen waste
- Started recycling our glass, rather than just moaning about the council not collecting it.
- Improved our overall recycling, reducing how much we put in the landfill bin
- Fitted more low energy bulbs and stopped leaving on lights that aren’t really needed (e.g. in the porch and hall)
- Switched to reusable bags for our shopping and started reusing our food bags.
That’s not bad going, but there’s still more to be done. As I’ve said before, our plan is to make small, incremental changes, which will be more manageable and sustainable than trying to change everything at once, and over time they’ll all add up to make quite a difference to how we live our lives.
The major issue now must surely be Ben’s disposable nappies, which are a subject that we’ve talked ourselves round in circles on several occasions. We are at least flushing all the ‘solids’ so that they don’t end up in the landfill, but the nappies themselves probably account for the greatest volume of any single item in our waste.
Additionally, I’d like to investigate switching to toiletries which come in returnable or refillable bottles/containers, avoiding aerosols as much as possible and I really do want to start walking to the office on the days when Sarah isn’t at work.
So, those are our starters for the next 6 months and who knows what else may be added along the way. Stay tuned for more of our Going Green adventure.

We have been trying to be a little more green ourselves, and I was the worlds worst for leaving a light (or other stuff) on when I left a room. So I fitted this http://www.ethicalsuperstore.com/products/electrisave/electricity-monitor/
After a few months with this little nag on the mantlepiece we are much more aware of the power we are using and (ususally) have any unnecessary stuff switched off.
