For Cod and Ulster

Surely only in Northern Ireland could you take a well-known, and potentially sensitive, political slogan and turn it into the name of a fish and chip shop? That’s exactly what the owners of ‘For Cod and Ulster’ have done, mimicking the ‘For God and Ulster’ motto of various Unionist organisations.

I first heard about ‘For Cod and Ulster’ a couple of months ago, but only today found their website, where a quick read of the menu shows that the owner’s sense of humour didn’t stop with the name of his establishment, but extends to beef burgers named after both Iain Paisley & Gerry Adams (caricatures of whom feature on the shop shutters) and chicken burgers named after the Boyne (site of the 1690 battle) & Drumcree (site of more recent skirmishes). There’s even ‘King Billy’s Family Feast’.

In ‘Norn Iron’, the ability to laugh at ourselves and our turbulent past seems to be built-in somewhere. The ‘For Cod and Ulster’ has been a big hit humour-wise with everyone I know, though I haven’t heard from anyone who has tried their food yet. I must get down there and try it soon… purely for research purposes, of course.
