Eco-Libris - Moving Towards Sustainable Reading

We’d like to thank Raz Godelnik for getting in touch regarding his new project Eco-Libris, a service that allows book readers balance out the paper used for their books by planting trees.

“About 20 Million trees are cut down annually for virgin paper used for the production of books sold in the U.S. alone. What we want to do is to raise awareness to the destructive environmental impacts of using paper for the production of books and provide people with an affordable and easy way to do something about it.” – Raz Godelnik

It certainly is affordable, costing only $1 per book to plant a tree and for convenience these ‘offsets’ are sold in batches of 5. For each book you balance out, Eco-Libris will send you a sticker (itself made from recycled paper) to put on your book cover, ‘displaying your commitment to sustainability and perhaps even inspiring others to become more responsible about their use of natural resources.’

On the tree planting side of the balancing act, Eco-Libris have partnered with 3 non-profit organizations, Sustainable Harvest, RIPPLE Africa and the Alliance for International Reforestation. These organisations work in Africa and Latin America, where planting trees not only helps fight climate change but also conserves soil and water, benefiting local people.

Best of luck to Raz and Eco-Libris with their project. If you have a green/eco-friendly project yourself, please drop us a line, telling us about your project and (though we can make no promises) we’ll try to feature it on Mad Eejits.
