And the Rain Came Down

Northern Ireland is certainly no stranger to damp summers, but even so, yesterday was quite exceptional. Having enjoyed a few hot and sunny days, the weather took a turn for the worse, with torrential rain and hail stones causing flash flooding in many areas.

The BBC News site has some photographs of the floods, including this one, which is just a mile or so from where we live. Despite this we were still surprised when, just before 7pm, we received several messages from friends checking that we were alright. We guessed that they’d heard on the news that East Belfast had been one of the worst affected areas and knew that’s the area we live in. We assured them that we were fine, thanked them for their concern and didn’t think much more of it.

It wasn’t until nearly 11pm that we caught a news bulletin on the local UTV channel showing that, just a couple of streets away from us, a river had burst its banks and the flood waters had been over one metre deep. Sarah had been home with Ben all day and I didn’t pass that way on my way back from work, so we’d no idea just how close the flooding had been.

With more rain predicted for later in the week, we might be needing a boat soon!

Well its still raining, but thankfully not as heavily, so its getting time to drain away.

I’m hoping it dries up for the weekend.
