A Greener Apple

With the appearance of an statement entitled ‘A Greener Apple’ on Apple’s website, Greenpeace is celebrating the apparent success of their I love my Apple, I just wish it came in Green campaign.

The campaign, which has been running for some time now, encouraged users and lovers of Apple products to petition the company to match or better the environmental policies of other major computer manufacturers, including Dell.

In its first major response to ‘some environmental organizations’, Apple claims that its is already taking steps to improve its environmental impact, but just didn’t communicate this fact well enough to their shareholders and customers.

“I was surprised to learn that in many cases Apple is ahead of, or will soon be ahead of, most of its competitors in these areas. Whatever other improvements we need to make, it is certainly clear that we have failed to communicate the things that we are doing well.” – Steve Jobs, Apple CEO.

One interesting point about iPods is that Apple is expanding its recycling scheme, currently available only in North America, to be a worldwide policy. This means that anyone returning an old iPod to their local Apple store for recycling will receive a 10% discount on their new iPod.

The statement finishes with a note that Apple is investigating the overall carbon footprint of all of its products and the current statement will not be the last we hear from the company on its journey to becoming a ‘Greener Apple’.

Of course, Greenpeace point out that Apple, along with all of the other manufacturers, still have a long way to go and, awarding Apple a current ‘score’ of 5 out of 10, have quickly updated their campaign to be ‘Green My Apple, to the Core’.
