For Cod and Ulster

Surely only in Northern Ireland could you take a well-known, and potentially sensitive, political slogan and turn it into the name of a fish and chip shop? That’s exactly what the owners of ‘For Cod and Ulster’ have done, mimicking the ‘For God and Ulster’ motto of various Unionist organisations.

Green Google

If you weren’t already convinced that ‘Green is the New Black’, then check out the actions of Google who, following a similar announcement from Yahoo, have declared their intentions to go carbon neutral. Google, though have a bit of a head start, having started work a massive photovoltaic solar panel system last October. In typical Google fashion, you can now access live(ish) statistics for the solar panels online.

Live Earth Badge

I’ve added the badge for Live Earth to this site (see right column). I’m not going to any of the concerts (the nearest is in London), but I probably will watch some of them on TV.

Job Security (Or Lack of It)

Well, I still have a job. Up to 10am this morning I wasn’t so sure, but for several people in the office, that uncertainty became a certainty in the wrong direction. I thought we’d left behind the days of mass job cuts, in software firms, after the fall-out of the ‘dot com bubble’ bursting. Yet here we are, several years later, cutting jobs to cut costs and hoping that sales pick up or we could be facing yet more redundancies.

Act On CO2

Chances are, if you live in the UK, you’ve seen the government sponsored Act On CO2 TV adverts, featuring little engines on wheels, driving around like cars. Change a Bulb, Change the Channel

For some time now, we’ve been experiencing the intermittent phenomenon of our TV (or to be precise, our digital TV box) changing channels and adjusting the volume without anyone using, or even being near to, the remote controller. The problem occurs just once each evening and then disappears as quickly as it started. At first we figured that the digi-box must have been picking up signals from another remote controller somewhere, but then don’t remotes work using infra-red and require line of sight to the receiver?

RecycleBank Dollars

When I read about RecycleBank over on WorldChanging, I was struck by what a great idea it is for encouraging people to recycle. The basic idea is that the amount of waste that you recycle is measured and you are then rewarded with a related number of ‘RecycleBank Dollars’ which can be used at a good number of participating stores and websites

Fever - A Lovely Way to Burn?

Ben certainly didn’t seem to think so when the poor little guy reached 40 degrees (about 104 in old money) by 4am on Friday night / Saturday morning.

It all started after my comments about ‘Man Flu’ in my previous post (nearly a week ago now). By late afternoon that day, real flu was setting in on me, complete with shivers, sweats and soreness. Sarah followed suit on Wednesday morning and we had to ship poor Ben off to his granny’s (where he had a great time, even with a cold) as neither of us was fit to look after him.
